BORCO – The family Matthiesen reorganizes corporate governance of their business by appointing two Managing Directors and advisory board

01.04.2019 zu

Hamburg, April 2019. Starting April 1st, 2019, the family-owned spirits company BORCO-MARKEN-IMPORT appoints Markus Kohrs-Lichte (46) and Kay Engelke-Engfeld (40) to its management board as Managing Directors and Chairmen of the board. In this capacity and within the scope of the dual leadership, they are taking over the strategic and operating business of one of the largest, independent spirits companies in Germany. Both managers are entrusted to maintain the independence of the family-business, to strengthen its portfolio as well as to further expand BORCO’s national and international positioning.

As “Managing Director Germany/Austria“ Markus Kohrs-Lichte will be guiding the entire business in the German and Austrian market. Before he joined BORCO in 2015 to work as General Manager Sales, he had held several leading positions throughout his career, including renowned brand manufacturers such as GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, Bacardi Germany and L’Oréal Germany. Markus Kohrs-Lichte has successfully managed to push forward the reorganization and restructuring of the BORCO sales team and has established the area of New Retail/E-Commerce. Since 2015, he has been able to sustainably expand and restructure the business in Germany and Austria.

Kay Engelke-Engfeld will be taking over the role of the “Managing Director Global Business”, continuing the management of the export and travel retail business and the international marketing and development of BORCO’s own brands and innovations, including SIERRA Tequila, Finsbury Gin, Canarío Cachaça and Old Pascas Rum. He has already been successfully directing the export business as International Business Development Director since 2014. Prior to this role, Kay Engelke-Engfeld had been able to gain profound marketing and sales experience in a wide range of companies such as Campbell’s, British American Tobacco, Bacardi and Diageo. In the past years, he succeeded with his team in tapping into numerous new countries, thereby developing the export business significantly.

The future management is supported by the establishment of a four-person advisory board. Besides the previous shareholders Uwe Matthiesen (chairman) and Bernd Matthiesen, Jens Matthiesen will be joining the advisory board as an additional family member alongside lawyer Dr. Ulf Renzenbrink as external member. Both Uwe Matthiesen and Bernd Matthiesen are changing from the management board to the advisory board with effect from April 1st, 2019, in order to assist the management with their know-how and experience, to provide advice and to supervise. From 1993 to 2014, Jens Matthiesen (53) had occupied a managerial position in the family-business, before he was responsible in his role as Managing Director for the operating business of particularly the departments International Sales and Purchasing in the years 2006-2014.

Dr. Tina Ingwersen-Matthiesen, shareholder, member of the board and member of the BORCO owner family Matthiesen, considers the new management structure to be a vital decision for the company’s future business: “By appointing Markus Kohrs-Lichte and Kay Engelke-Engfeld as Managing Directors, we are able to establish a dual leadership with two experienced personalities, who have been enjoying our full trust for years and have been contributing to the national as well as international business significantly. The corporate governance structure of a dual leadership and an advisory board enables us to further strengthen BORCO as an independent, dynamic family-business in our domestic market and abroad. Additionally, it offers us a great possibility to further expand our premium portfolio. The Matthiesen family is convinced that the restructuring of the company’s management puts BORCO in an excellent position for the future.”
